Personal motivation ruins everything–SP

Devotee:. We have to appraise that if Your Divine Grace leaves us, what will be the result both to ISKCON society, to each of you disciples individually, and to the entire planet.
Srila PrabhupādaThat I am thinking, that such a big society, the aims and object may be dismantled. I am thinking from that vision. Srila Prabhupada room conversation – Vrindavana, Uttara Pradesh, India – October 26, 1977

Srila Prabhupada on what happens if you know that someone is committing criminal activities, and you associate with them

Srila Prabhupāda: (aside:) That child…? So that separation… Crows will not like to live with the ducks and white swans. And white swans will not like to live with the crows. That is natural division. “Birds of the same feather flock together.
Jagadīśa: And honest men don’t like to associate with thieves and criminals.
Srila Prabhupāda: Yes, that is natural. We are not interested even with these daily newspapers. We are interested Bhagavad-gītā. We don’t keep any news. We know the dogs are barking. That’s all. But that does not mean we have to mix with the dogs.
Jagadīśa: If you know that someone is committing criminal activities, then if you associate with them, you’ll also become implicated.
Srila PrabhupādaYes. Sangāt sañjāyate kāma.
Conversation on Train to Allahabad with His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda Prayaga [Allahabad], Uttara Pradesh, India – January 11, 1977

Srila Prabhupada’s warning about persons who do not bear witness, although they know things as they are
“…Regarding the position of a person who does not speak even when he knows the truth: jani saksi nahi deya tara papa haya. ‘ A person who knows things as they are and still does not bear witness becomes involved in sinful activities….”
Krsna is the ultimate witness

“…He can see. His eyes are not like this, that beyond this wall I cannot see anything. He can see everyone, what you are doing nonsense. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gītā. As witness, He is seeing. He is within your heart. How you will hide it? Anumantā upadrastā…” Srila Prabhupada: Srimad-Bhagavatam lectures S.B. 2.9.14 – Melbourne, Australia – April 13, 1972

“Religious principles have certainly been violated in this assembly. One should not remain for even a moment in a place where irreligion is flourishing. A wise person should not enter an assembly if he knows the participants there are committing acts of impropriety. And if, having entered such an assembly, he fails to speak the truth, speaks falsely or pleads ignorance, he will certainly incur sin.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.44.9-10
Unless one satisfies the spiritual master, he gets the bīja, or root cause, of karma, jñāna and yoga without the benefit of devotional service. However, one who is faithful to his spiritual master gets the bhakti-latā-bīja. This bhakti-latā-bīja is received when one is initiated by the bona fide spiritual master. After receiving the spiritual master’s mercy, one must repeat his instructions, and this is called śravaa-kīrtana-hearing and chanting. One who has not properly heard from the spiritual master or who does not follow the regulative principles is not fit for chanting (kīrtana). This is explained in Bhagavad-gītā (2.41):vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandanaOne who has not listened carefully to the instructions of the spiritual master is unfit to chant or preach the cult of devotional service. One has to water the bhakti-latā-bīja after receiving instructions from the spiritual master…” Sri Caitanya-Caritamrta – Original unrevised edition – Madhya-lila 19.152

Srila Prabhupada warning: “You cannot change a single alphabet”

“… The parampara system means… Just like we claim parampara system from Krsna. So whatever Krsna says or He said 5,000 years ago, we are repeating the same thing. That is called parampara system. Not that “The world has changed. Scientific advancement is very great. Now we can interpret in this way and that way.” This is all nonsense. All nonsense. You cannot change a single alphabetThey are all unmistakable. They cannot be changed. So that is niscayam atmanah.     If you want to know positively, what is God, then we should take lesson from a self-realized soul who has understood, who has seen. Jnaninas tattva-darsinah. Just like here it is tattva-niscayam atmanah. So tattvam, the truth, so one must have seen the truth, realized the truthTad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet. That is guru. Means one who has seen the truth. How he has seen the truth? Through the parampara system. Krsna said this, and then Brahma said the same thing, then Narada said the same thing, Vyasadeva said the same thing, and then disciplic succession, Madhvacarya, Madhavendra Puri, Isvara Puri, Lord Caitanya, Sad- osvami, Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami, Srinivasa Acarya, Narottama dasa Thakura, Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura. In this way. Jagannatha dasa Babaji, Gaura Kisora dasa Babaji, haktisiddhanta Sarasvati. Then we are speaking. The same thing. Not that “Because we are modernized… Your modern science has changed.” Nothing has changed. It is all foolishness…” Srila Prabhupada lectures. Los Angeles, California, USA- June 24, 1976

“I am not much fond of the idea of changing things to accommodate the public — better to change the public to accommodate us.” Srila Prabhupada letter – Bombay, Maharasthra, India – December 28, 1971
Srila Prabhupada regarding the qualifications of a bona fide spirtual master: unalloyed devotee

“… This is the way to advance in spiritual science. One must accept the words of an ācārya, a bona fide spiritual master, to clear the path for spiritual advancement. This is the secret of success. However, one’s guide must be a spiritual master who is actually an unalloyed devotee strictly following the instructions of the previous ācārya without deviation. Whatever the spiritual master says must be accepted by the disciple. Only then is success certain. This is the Vedic system…” Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Original unrevised edition – Madhya-Lila 10.17

“…The incident herein described is very significant. In a previous verse it is stated, vinā mahat-pāda-rajo-’bhisekam: one cannot attain perfection without smearing the dust from the lotus feet of an exalted devotee on his head. If one always follows the orders of the spiritual master, there is no question of falling down. As soon as a foolish disciple tries to overtake his spiritual master and becomes ambitious to occupy his post, he immediately falls down. Yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo yasyāprasādān na gatih kuto ’pi . If the spiritual master is considered an ordinary man, the disciple surely loses his chance to advance further. Despite a very rigid life in devotional service, Bharata Mahārāja did not consult a spiritual master when he became overly attached to a deer. Consequently, he became strongly attached to the deer, and, forgetting his spiritual routine, he fell down….” Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.12.14

Srila Prabhupada regarding why different persons cannot understand Krsna

“…Actually, the purpose of Bhagavad-gītā is not understandable to those who are sensuous-even if one is not sensuous but is strictly following the disciplines enjoined in the Vedic scripture, if he is not a devotee, he also cannot understand Krsna. Even when one poses himself as a devotee of Krsna, but is not engaged in Krsna conscious activities, he also cannot understand Krsna. There are many persons who envy Krsna because He has explained in Bhagavad-gītā that He is the Supreme and that nothing is above Him or equal to Him. There are many persons who are envious of Krsna. Such persons should not be told of Bhagavad-gītā, for they cannot understand. There is no possibility of faithless persons’ understanding Bhagavad-gītā and Krsna. Without understanding Krsna from the authority of a pure devotee, one should not try to comment upon Bhagavad-gitā…” Bhagavad-gita As It Is (1972) Conclusion – Original unrevised edition – The Perfection of Renunciation Bg 18.67

NoteBut the question may be raised as to why is it that we have seen so many devotees, even senior devotees with many years of direct physical association with the acarya, Srila Prabhupada, were [and are] seemingly incapable of clearly understanding Krishna Consciousness philosophy, with so many examples of distortion, blatant philosophical deviations, concoctions, misrepresentations etc. What is the reason for this? The acarya, Srila Prabhupada, explains:

Srila Prabhupada warns about the danger of personal motivation

In my books I have tried to explain clearly this simultaneously one and different philosophy acinta beda beda tattva propounded by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. But sometimes it happens that this philosophy is given a self-interested interpretationAs soon as personal motivation comes in it is not possible for one to understand our Krishna Consciousness philosophy. Srila Prabhupada letter, September 21, 1970

Srila Prabhupada’s expectation for the leaders of the movement
Srila Prabhupada warms about so-called advancement on the basis of self motivation

“…I am very glad that you are trying with all the other GBC members to maintain all the various functions of our very large organization up to the standard as I have set for you. This is most important. So please always work cooperatively for this end. I know that there has been a great disturbance amongst the devotees caused recently, but now things are being rectified. You are right to say that the example and kindly guidance of our elder members in the Society is the most profound force for motivating our students both new and old towards advanced Krsna Consciousness. Neglect of following the regulative activities and so-called advancement on the basis of self-motivationare both offensive. One should sincerely try to bring himself to the stage of devotional service motivated by pure love of Krsna, and our personal example must set a guide for them…” Srila Prabhupada letter, November 25, 1970

Srila Prabhupada has many times defined what is our mission. In this conversation, He warns about the danger of personal sense gratification and what should be our only real ambition

Srila Prabhupāda: We have no other business. We want to see people live, eating very nicely nutritious food, keeping good health. But unnecessarily artificial things, bothering, that we don’t want. Keep your health very nice, live for as many years as possible, and be Krsna conscious. Then, next life, you go back to home, back to Godhead, permanent life. Yad gatvā na nivartante [Bg. 15.6]. This we want to give. There is no cheating. There is no politics, nopersonaambition fulfilling. This is our mission. Try to convince them. There is not a little tinge of personal sense gratification. This is our… Now can you point out, any one of them, that “Here is the point, the personal sense gratification”? We are talking amongst ourselves, so if there is any flaw, you can point out. Can anyone? That “Here is the point, personal sense gratification”? There is no such things in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Tāndera carana-sebi-bhakta-sane bās. Our only ambition is we live among devotees and execute the mission of our predecessors, Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Krsna. This is our ambition. Srila Prabhupada conversation, Vrndavana, Uttara Praadesha, May 27, 1977

“…We should lay out the subject matter as nicely as possible to our intelligence and capacity, and without anyambition that it must attract customers. They may attract or not attract, it doesn’t matter. …” Srila Prabhupada letter, February 22, 1969

Many persons ask what the aim of this worldwide movement. Srila Prabhupada again reiterates the point that it is not for any personal ambition.
Srila Prabhupada warns about the personal ambition problem
.

“…I am just trying to organize a worldwide movement not for any personaambition but to execute superior orders, and by the grace of Krsna we are getting good encouragement. So I request my students to cooperate fully…” Srila Prabhupada letters to: Jayapataka — Los Angeles, California July 26, 1970

“…so I am fervently appealing to you all not to create fracture in the solid body of the Society. Please work conjointly, without any personal ambition. That will help the cause…”
Srila Prabhupada letter- July 31, 1970

“…Our life is very short. The Krsna consciousness movement is not meant for fulfilling one’s personal ambition, but it is a serious movement for the whole world…”
Srila Prabhupada letter, July 31, 1970

“…Regarding B…….., he is actually surrendered soul, but Maya is so strong that on account of association he has even fallen down. So these two things are always side by side—Maya and Krsna—Krsna is service and Maya is sense gratification, so every moment we are prone to be subjugated by either of them. Our duty is therefore to be very, very careful. The poison is personal ambition. So everyone has the chance, therefore one should not be complacent. Doubts may come about, but one should be firmly fixed up that there cannot be any doubt on the Spiritual Master or Krsna….” Srila Prabhupada letter, November 1, 1970

And what is the danger of personal ambition: preaching work may stop

“…As alleged by you I have received complaints against B ….M….. and his wife, so seriously so much so that the girl has declared that Bali Mardan is an incarnation of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura on my name. In India some of the important members they have collected huge amounts in the name of the Society and spent it luxuriouslyI wanted you all my experienced disciples should manage the whole institution very cleverly without any personaambition like ordinary materialistic men. The Gaudiya Math institution has become smashed, at least stopped its program of preaching work on account of personal ambitions…” Srila Prabhupada letter, October 8, 1974.
Srila Prabhupada warns that if we think in terms of personal benefit, the institution will be ruined

.:Please accept my blessings. I have seen your telegram to Brahmananda Swami and am glad to learn that you have opened a center in Zambia. You have made some progress there since going and I am pleased. You are a good worker. All my disciples they are good boys, intelligent, and hard working. I pray to Krishna that you all may use your intelligence for Krishna’s service and not for any personal ambition. We have worked very hard and established a great institution, but if we think for our personal benefit then it will become ruined. This is my only concern…” Srila Prabhupada letter, November 1, 1974

That is the difference between demon and devotee. Devotee strictly follows the order of God; he is happy. And demon, he also knows what is God’s desire; he disobeys, he acts according to his whim, he suffers. So God is giving instruction. There is no doubt about it. Externally He is giving instructions through His agent, spiritual master, through books; and internally as consciousness, conscience. He is giving, always, but the rascal will not accept. Then he must suffer. What can be done? Srila Prabhupada Philosophy discussions with Hayagriva dasa re Blaise Pascal

Intelligence in the mode of passion is always working perversely. It accepts religions which are not actually religions and rejects actual religion. All views and activities are misguided. Men of passionate intelligence understand a great soul to be a common man and accept a common man as a great soul. They think truth to be untruth and accept untruth as truth. In all activities they simply take the wrong path; therefore, their intelligence is in the mode of passion. Bhagavad-gita As It Is (1972) Original unrevised edition,18.31

… One who is conducted by false ego and thus always distressed, both mentally and sensually, cannot tolerate the opulence of self-realized persons. Being unable to rise to the standard of self-realization, he envies such persons as much as demons envy the Supreme Personality of Godhead…” Srimad-Bhagavatam “The Creation of the Fourth Order” Talks Between Lord Siva and Sati SB 4.3.21

Similarly, instead of offering respect to self-realized persons, foolish men who cannot approach the highest standard of self-realization are always envious, although there is no reason…” Srimad-Bhagavatam “The Creation of the Fourth Order” Talks Between Lord Siva and Sati SB 4.3.21

Similarly, mahīyasām pādarajo’bhisekam: the dust of the lotus feet of great personalities offers all good to the recipient, but the same dust can also do harm. Those who are offenders at the lotus feet of a great personality dry up; their godly qualities diminish. A great soul may forgive offenses, but Krsna does not excuse offenses to the dust of that great soul’s feet, just as one can tolerate the scorching sunshine on one’s head but cannot tolerate the scorching sunshine on one’s feet. An offender glides down more and more; therefore he naturally continues to commit offenses at the feet of the great soul. Offenses are generally committed by persons who falsely identify with the impermanent body. King Daksa was deeply engrossed in a misconception because he identified the body with the soul. He offended the lotus feet of Lord Śiva because he thought that his body, being the father of the body of Satī, was superior to Lord Śiva’s. Generally, less intelligent men misidentify in that way, and they act in the bodily concept of life. Thus they are subject to commit more and more offenses at the lotus feet of great souls. One who has such a concept of life is considered to be in the class of animals like cows and asses. Srimad-Bhagavatam “The Creation of the Fourth Order” Sati Quits Her Body SB 4.4.13

“The spiritual master must never be carried away by an accumulation of wealth or a large number of followers. A bona fide spiritual master will never become like that. But sometimes, if a spiritual master is not properly authorized, and only on his own initiative becomes a spiritual master, he may be carried away by an accumulation of wealth and large numbers of disciples. His is not a very high grade of devotional service. If a person is carried away by such achievements, then his devotional service becomes slackened. One should, therefore, strictly adhere to the principles of disciplic succession.” Nectar of Devotion, Chapter 14

Srila Prabhupada’s warning about the destination of those who mislead people

“…Leaders who have fallen into ignorance and who mislead people by directing them to the path of destruction [as described in the previous verse] are, in effect, boarding a stone boat, and so too are those who blindly follow them. A stone boat would be unable to float and would sink in the water with its passengersSimilarly, those who mislead people go to hell and their followers go with them…” Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.7.14 I

“…As for your next question, can only a few pure devotees deliver others, anyone, if he is a pure devotee he can deliver others, he can become spiritual master. But unless he on that platform he should not attempt it. Then both of them will go to hell, like blind men leading the blind…”
Srila Prabhupada letter, December 14, 1972

Srila Prabhupada warns that if we think in terms of personal benefit, the institution will be ruined.

“… So therefore, this process Prahlāda Mahārāja is demonstrating by his personal behavior because he is mahājana. He is mahājana. Out of the twelve mahājanas. The śāstra says, mahājano yena gata sa panthāh [Cc. Madhya 17.186], one has to follow the mahājana, authorized person. Mahājana means authorized person. Ordinary jana, common man, and mahājanameans authorized person. We cannot take lesson, instruction from unauthorized person. This authorization must come through the disciplic succession. If the spiritual master, authorized spiritual master says, “You do this,” that we have to do. That we are singing daily…” Srila Prabhupada Srimad-Bhagavatam Lectures S.B. 7.9.7 — Mayapur, West Bengal, India – February 14, 1976

Kṛṣṇa’s mercy, and guru’s mercy. If one is serious, Kṛṣṇa is satisfied: “Now he’s serious about finding out, about knowing Me.” Then Kṛṣṇa gives him direction that “Here is guru, My representative. You take shelter of him and you will get Me.” This is the way Srila Prabhupada Nectar of Devotion lectures Vrindavana, Uttara Pradesha, India – October 31, 1972:

Jagadīśa: If you know that someone is committing criminal activities, then if you associate with them, you’ll also become implicated.
Srila Prabhupāda: Yes. Sagāt sañjāyate kāma.

Bg 16.4 P The Divine And Demoniac Natures
In this verse, the royal road to hell is described. The DEMONIAC WANT TO MAKE A SHOW OF RELIGION AND ADVANCEMENT IN SPIRITUAL SCIENCE, ALTHOUGH THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THE PRINCIPLES. THEY ARE ALWAYS ARROGANT or proud in possessing some type of education or so much wealth. THEY DESIRE TO BE WORSHIPED BY OTHERS, AND DEMAND RESPECTABILITY, ALTHOUGH THEY DO NOT COMMAND RESPECT. Over trifles they become very angry and speak harshly, not gently. They do not know what should be done and what should not be done. THEY DO EVERYTHING WHIMSICALLY, ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN DESIRE, AND THEY DO NOT RECOGNIZE ANY AUTHORITY.

BEWARE OF SELF-INTERESTED PEOPLE AFTER PERSONAL AGGRANDIZEMENT WHO DEVIATE OTHERS FROM THE ACTUAL PATH.
Bg 4.42 P Transcendental Knowledge
A bona fide spiritual master is in the disciplic succession from time eternal, and he does not deviate at all from the instructions of the Supreme Lord as they were imparted millions of years ago to the sun-god, from whom the instructions of Bhagavad-gita have come down to the earthly kingdom. One should, therefore, follow the path of Bhagavad-gita as it is expressed in the Gita itself AND BEWARE OF SELF-INTERESTED PEOPLE AFTER PERSONAL AGGRANDIZEMENT WHO DEVIATE OTHERS FROM THE ACTUAL PATH. The Lord is definitely the supreme person, and His activities are transcendental. One who understands this is a liberated person from the very beginning of his study of the Gita.

Srila Prabhupāda: You don’t become envious to your spiritual master. Then you will become free from envy.As soon as you become envious to your spiritual master, then you will…, then begins envious. Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa
Srila Prabhupada Srimad-Bhagavatam lectures S.B.7.7.29-31 – San Francisco, California, USA – March 15, 1967

– most Airports closed to Book Distribution – Is there no desire left in ISKCON to reopen it?
– Hari Nams are way down in frequency or non-existing, once seen, now rarely seen.
– the Bhakta Program is DOA… Dead on Arrival. Men’s & Women’s ashrams are mostly GONE
– the Temples are empty (dead) as almost no one is joining in the West anymore – WHY?
– the Sunday Love Feasts in ISKCON are 90-95% Indians in most Temples now.
– Hindu Festivals like Diwali and Holi are promoted even above Gaura Purnima in many places
– no one preaches against Mayavadi’s and bogus Indian gurus anymore! WHY? (Instead, Radhanath Swami makes friends with them and they come to pollute ISKCON)
– strong preaching in lectures is a thing of the past… now its storytelling and making jokes!
Some Conclusions—The above statements (compiled by Yasoda nandan das) are only a few of the many warnings Srila Prabhupada gave to us his disciples.Personal ambition the poison of  pure bhakti, applies to all of us, not just the so called leaders. Over time I have also noticed a gradual decline in enthusiasm and interest in devotees to take part in local programs and this is mainly due to not following the regulative principles because when one DOES follow, he or she does not lose enthusiasm for devotional service. So the choice as always, is individual , if we want to stay as devotees, if we want to advance as devotees we must have regular association with like minded devotees.  To give up the association of devotees means to break the regulative principles.
Madhya 19.157 By contacting nondevotees and engaging in nondevotional
activities, a so-called mature devotee will fall victim to the mad elephant offense.
Whatever growth has taken place is quickly uprooted by such an offense. One
should therefore be very careful to defend the creeper by fencing it
in-that is, by following the regulative principles and associating
with pure devotees…. However, unless one follows the spiritual master’s
instructions and the regulative principles governing chanting and
hearing the holy name of the Lord, one cannot become a pure devotee.
By one’s mental concoctions, one falls down By associating with
nondevotees, one breaks the regulative principles and is thereby lost.
