Doubt-first sign of intelligence–SP

January 2, 2019 in Articles by Damaghosa dasa

SB 3.26.30-Doubt, misapprehension, correct apprehension, memory and sleep, as determined by their different functions, are said to be the distinct characteristics of intelligence.
PURPORT-Doubt is one of the important functions of intelligence; blind acceptance of something does not give evidence of intelligence. Therefore the word saṁśaya is very important; in order to cultivate intelligence, one should be doubtful in the beginning. But doubting is not very favorable when information is received from the proper source. In Bhagavad-gītā the Lord says that doubting the words of the authority is the cause of destruction.
As described in the Patañjali yoga system, pramāṇa-viparyaya-vikalpa-nidra-smṛtyaḥ. By intelligence only one can understand things as they are. By intelligence only can one understand whether or not he is the body. The study to determine whether one’s identity is spiritual or material begins in doubt. When one is able to analyze his actual position, the false identification with the body is detected. This is viparyāsa. When false identification is detected, then real identification can be understood. Real understanding is described here as niścayaḥ, or proved experimental knowledge. This experimental knowledge can be achieved when one has understood the false knowledge. By experimental or proved knowledge, one can understand that he is not the body but spirit soul.

Some Conclusions– This is a very instructive purport by Srila Prabhupada for he tells us how we should accept or reject something. When iskcon devotees were first offered the bait of post Nov 1977 bogus gurus being presented to them, many if not most, accepted. But later so many doubts came in due to the intelligence of the devotees and the results of this un authorized guru experiment. Here in the purport Srila Prabhupada tells us that we should first doubt, then after seeing the actual sastric proof, we can then accept something as valid. Now some 42 years later, all the information is out there to make an “intelligent” decision about who is an actual guru or spiritual master and who is not. If one has still not figured this out by now, then he or she is not very intelligent nor are they serious about spiritual life.

Reporter: Don’t you feel that people are suspicious because of their experience with fake gurus? If you went to a quack dentist and he broke your tooth, you might be suspicious about going to another dentist.
Śrīla Prabhupāda: Yes. Naturally, if you are cheated, you become suspicious. But this does not mean that if you are cheated once, you will always be cheated. You should find someone genuine. But to come to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, you must be either very fortunate or well aware of this science.

(Srila Prabhupada Morning Walk, Los Angeles, December 7, 1973)
Devotee: If someone is actually sincere, can he be cheated, or will he always get a bona fide guru?
Prabhupada: No, if he is sincere, he’ll get.
Devotee: Bona fide.
Prabhupada: Yes. Guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja (CC Madhya 19.151). Guru and Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is within you. As soon as He sees that you are sincere, He’ll give you the right person.
Devotee: So if you are not completely sincere, you might get a Guru Maharaj-ji.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Devotee: If you’re not completely sincere, you might get someone else.
Prabhupada: Yes. Because you want to be cheated, you go to the cheater. That’s all. Ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tāṁs tathaiva bhajāmy aham (BG 4.11). Kṛṣṇa is intelligent, superintelligent. If you are a cheater, He’ll cheat you. He’ll cheat you. First-class cheat, Kṛṣṇa. But if you’re actually sincere, then He’ll give you the right thing. That is stated in the Bhag…, mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca (BG 15.15): “Everything is coming from Me: smṛtiḥ, remembrance, and forgetfulness.” If you are a cheater, Kṛṣṇa will give you such intelligence, you’ll forget Kṛṣṇa forever.
Dr. Wolfe: Srila Prabhupada, so it is so, “Birds of a feather flock together.” The cheaters flock together.
Prabhupada: Yes. “Birds of the same feather flock together.”

Some Qualifications of a bona fide spiritual master-
March 2 1966 NY–Now, to take such guidance means the spiritual master should also be a very perfect man. Otherwise, how can he guide? …Therefore one has to select a spiritual master whose order, carrying, you’ll not commit a mistake. You see? Now, suppose if you accept a wrong person as spiritual master, and if you, if he guides you wrongly, then your whole life is spoiled. So one has to accept a spiritual master whose guidance will make his life perfect. That is the relation between spiritual master and disciple. It is not a formality. It is a great responsibility both for the disciple and for the spiritual master.

TLC 18–Unless one is under the shelter of a realized spiritual master, his understanding of the Supreme is simply foolishness.

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.2.24-25 —Gorakhpur, February 13, 1971….-So our business is to accept a bona fide spiritual master, being guided by him, to follow the rules and regulations. Then advancement is sure. There is no doubt about it. And if we become hodgepodge and mix with hodgepodge and do hodgepodge, there is no progress.

But Kṛṣṇa, as soon as He was accepted by Arjuna as guru… Śiṣyas te ‘haṁ śādhi māṁ prapannam: [Bg. 2.7] “Now, Kṛṣṇa, I accept You as my guru. Not as friend.” Because friendly talking is useless waste of time. He accepted Him as guru. When guru speaks, you cannot argue. That is not the process. You should accept a guru who is infallible. Otherwise it is useless. He accepted guru Kṛṣṇa because Kṛṣṇa is infallible. If we accept guru, a bogus guru, then it is no benefit. Guru means Kṛṣṇa’s representative. Not that everyone can be guru.

Follow bogus guru-you  go to hell-
SB 1.19.37  P    The Appearance of Sukadeva Gosvami    Unless  one is perfectly anxious to inquire about the way of perfection, there is no  necessity of approaching a spiritual master. A spiritual master is not a kind of  decoration for a householder. Generally a fashionable materialist engages a  so-called spiritual master without any profit. The pseudo spiritual  master flatters the so-called disciple, and thereby both the master and his ward  go to hell without a doubt.

72-12-14.Letter: Tusta  Krsna    As for your next question, can only a few pure devotees  deliver others, anyone, if he is a pure devotee he can deliver others, he can  become spiritual master. But unless he on that platform he should not  attempt it. Then both of them will to go to hell, like blind men  leading the blind.

SB 6.7.14  Indra  Offends His Spiritual Master, Brhaspati.    Leaders who have fallen  into ignorance and who mislead people by directing them to the path of  destruction [as described in the previous verse] are, in effect, boarding a  stone boat, and so too are those who blindly follow them. A stone boat would be  unable to float and would sink in the water with its passengers.  Similarly, those who mislead people go to hell, and their followers  go with them.

Madhya 22.153 : PURPORT :Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura says: rūpa-raghunātha-pade haibe ākuti kabe hāma bujhaba se yugala pirīti.The sahajiyās‘ understanding of the love affairs between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa is not bona fide because they do not follow the principles laid down by the six Gosvāmīs. Their illicit connection and their imitation of the dress of Rūpa Gosvāmī as well as their avoidance of the prescribed methods of revealed scriptures will lead them to the lowest regions of hell. These imitative sahajiyās are cheated and unfortunate. They are not equal to advanced devotees (paramahaṁsas). Debauchees and paramahaṁsas are not on the same level.

June 30 1974 letter—As far as my blessing is concerned it does not require my physical presence. If you are chanting Hare Krishna there and following my instructions, reading the books, taking only Krsna prasadam etc., then there is no question of your not receiving the blessings of Lord Caitanya whose mission I am humbly trying to push on.
