The name Hari has many meanings–SP

June 30, 2021 in Articles by Damaghosa dasa

Madhya 24.53--“Lord Kṛṣṇa even attracts the mind of the goddess of fortune simply by vibrating His transcendental flute.
Madhya 24.54–” ‘O Lord, we do not know how the serpent Kāliya attained such an opportunity to be touched by the dust of Your lotus feet. For this end, the goddess of fortune performed austerities for centuries, giving up all other desires and taking austere vows. Indeed, we do not know how this serpent Kāliya got such an opportunity.’
Madhya 24.59–“Although the word hari has many different meanings, two of them are foremost. One meaning is that the Lord takes away all inauspicious things from His devotee, and the second meaning is that He attracts the mind by ecstatic love for God.
Madhya 24.60–“When the devotee somehow or other always remembers the Supreme Personality of Godhead anywhere and everywhere, Lord Hari takes away life’s four miserable conditions.
PURPORT-The four miserable conditions are due to the four kinds of sinful activities, known as (1) pātaka, (2) urupātaka, (3) mahā-pātaka and (4) atipātaka-preliminary sin, very great sin, greater sin and topmost sin. However, Kṛṣṇa assures the devotee, ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ: “I will protect you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.” The word sarva-pāpebhyaḥ indicates four kinds of sinful activity. As soon as the devotee surrenders unto Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet, he is certainly relieved from all sinful activities and their results. The four basic sinful activities are summarized as illicit sex, intoxication, gambling and meat-eating.
Madhya 24.62–In this way, when all sinful activities are vanquished by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one gradually vanquishes all kinds of impediments on the path of devotional service, as well as the ignorance resulting from these impedimentsAfter this, one totally manifests his original love of Godhead through devotional service in nine different ways-hearing, chanting and so forth.
Madhya 24.63–“When the devotee is freed from all sinful material activities, Kṛṣṇa attracts his body, mind and senses to His service. Thus Kṛṣṇa is very merciful, and His transcendental qualities are very attractive.
Madhya 24.64-“When one’s mind, senses and body are attracted to the transcendental qualities of Hari, one gives up the four principles of material success. Thus I have explained the chief meanings of the word hari.
PURPORT-The four principles of material success are (1) religious performance, (2) economic development, (3) sense gratification and (4) liberation, or merging in the impersonal effulgence of Brahman. These things do not interest the devotee.
Some Conclusions–This is a very nice sequence of verses in CC where Lord Caitanya is explaining the famous Atmarama verse of SB in 61 different ways.  Formerly He did the same with Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya but only in 18 different ways.
The essence of this conversation is that once one begins the chanting of the Holy names of Krsna, Rama and Hari, all auspicious things begin to take place. Prabhupada gave the example once of pouring milk into a glass filled with ink. The ink being our sinful activities. Once this (chanting) pouring began and was continued, the glass looked like a swirl of dark or ink colored milk, which meant that our sins were being shook up and dislodged from our hearts. In the beginning it does not look very pretty, but then neither does an old dirty closet appear nice when you open the door and find all sorts of nasty things in it.  There is a nice verse in BG which states….
BG 7.28-Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life, whose sinful actions are completely eradicated and who are freed from the duality of delusion, engage themselves in My service with determination.
So bottom line, lets not be discouraged, but keep pouring milk into that cup !
Madhya 24.62–“In this way, when all sinful activities are vanquished by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one gradually vanquishes all kinds of impediments on the path of devotional service, as well as the ignorance resulting from these impediments. After this, one totally manifests his original love of Godhead through devotional service in nine different ways-hearing, chanting and so forth.

Biogenesis and the Birth of Modern Science by Narasimha das

Biogenesis and the Birth of Modern Science

By Narasimha das

The ancient Greeks, specifically the renowned philosopher Aristotle (384 B.C – 322 B.C.), believed that living things were spontaneously generated from non-living matter.

Aristotle was a naturalist who loved to observe animals and nature while taking long walks through the country. He noticed that ponds were full of various species, such as fish, frogs and tiny swimming insects. Later, in the summer months, many of these ponds would dry up and appear to become lifeless mud sinks or totally dry beds. But when the rains came, the same dry beds would fill up again with aquatic life. He wondered how all this life became regenerated. After pondering this puzzle for a long while, he finally concluded that earth itself had the power to generate life spontaneously under certain conditions. Observing the life cycles of insects on land, he came to similar conclusions: that rotting meat, animal fur and other nonliving matter had the potency to generate various forms life under specific conditions.

Aristotle was considered one the greatest thinkers of his era, so naturally his published findings circulated to nearby Arab countries, and gradually such misleading ideas spread west to European nations. Such misinformation gradually evolved into a system of superstitions and beliefs that were taught in school texts on biology and medicine.

Due, perhaps, to the liberating influence of the advent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu on Earth (1484-1532), Europe started to slowly emerge from the Dark Ages. During the Dark Ages people had no idea how or why deadly diseases like the black plague were spread. City people would pass stool and urine in buckets and then throw it out their townhouse windows, yelling a warning to pedestrians, “Loo!” (This is how the term “loo” came to mean toilet or latrine.) Some streets were, at times, ankle deep in human excrement. Surgeons had no idea of any need for cleanliness. In fact, doctors would often wear their most filthy clothes to perform surgeries with unwashed scalpels, just as field workers and street cleaners would wear filthy clothes for their work, saving their clean clothing for social affairs. Thus, many patients would “mysteriously” die shortly after even routine surgeries.

William Harvey (1578-1657) became famous for his discovery that blood circulates through the body in veins and blood vessels. In one of his writings, he mentioned that it was possible that insects may lay eggs that were too small to be seen with the naked eye. The glimmer of light from this suggestion inspired and motivated another early scientist, Francisco Redi (1626-1697), to investigate further. Soon he became convinced that the prevailing theories of his day were ill-conceived. He demonstrated through experiments that life was not be generated spontaneously from non-living matter and that such conjectures had no basis. His controlled experiments involved sterilization through heating and various means of sealing containers and then comparing these with non-sterilized open containers of the same organic substances. He boldly propounded his views that life was generated not spontaneously from dead matter but from living organisms, some that were too small to be seen with the naked eye or laid eggs too small to be seen.

People of his day were stunned by this fantastic new theory. Aristotle had been highly regarded in the West for many centuries as one of the greatest thinkers and naturalists of all time. People wondered, “How could Aristotle have been so wrong?”

To prove his theory, Redi devised several interesting experiments to demonstrate that life comes from life. These experiments were literally the birth of modern sciences, specifically biology and medicine, which relies on controlled observations and experiments to demonstrate the truth or fallacy of theories like Redi’s and Aristotle’s. Redi’s experiments gave rise to modern-day knowledge regarding food preservation through sterilization, and sanitation through disinfecting. He had demonstrated in many of ways that life is generated only from other living things and that non-living matter had no power to generate life on its own. Scientists then began forming groups for the sake of exchanging their findings derived through various means of experimentation and observation. Redi and his followers strongly propounded their new understanding known as biogenesis, which establishes that life arises only from previously existing life and not from non-living matter.

A breakthrough came when a humble lens grinder, Antonio Van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), refined his art with the help of a renowned spectacle maker. He learned how to grind a precision magnifying lens and how to achieve further magnification by stacking lens in a tube. In this way he created the first known microscope. With his microscope he was able to observe microbes for the first time, and this led to many new discoveries. At first other scientists were doubtful about the existence of microbes because they were unable to match the precision and power of Leeuwenhoek’s microscopes.

Soon Leeuwenhoek’s discoveries of microbes were verified by other scientists, yet many scientists clung to their belief that microbes themselves were spontaneously generated from non-living substances. Aristotle had taught that non-living substances can create life under certain conditions, and this widely accepted belief had been around for centuries. Long held beliefs die hard.

Despite clear evidence supporting biogenesis, many scientists challenged the idea for another 150 years. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, a member of the French Academy of Sciences, Dr. Pouchet, published a compelling book that attempted to reaffirm the idea that micro-organisms were spontaneously generated from non-living matter. His book was highly lauded by scientists worldwide.

Dr. Pouchet’s findings did not go unchallenged for long. Louis Pasteur read Pouchet’s book and wrote to him explaining several discrepancies in his methods, findings and conclusions. Pasteur was considered one of the top scientists of his times, especially in France, and he is still considered one the most important scientists of the modern age. Pasteur strongly refuted Pouchet’s ideas through a series of experiments and debates. The scientific community and general public were divided in their opinion on this issue. Many challenges and counter-challenges went back and forth and gave rise to varieties of experiments under careful controls.

Congregationally chanting Hare Krsna-otherwise we become complicated with details only-SP

June 26, 2021 in Articles by Damaghosa dasa

Hare Krsna-below is just one point taken out in a 1974 LA lecture by Srila Prabhupada

summer 1974 LA temple lecture by SP

Truthfulness, cleanliness, and forgiveness are also decreasing. Formerly, if someone did something wrong, the other party would forgive him.For example, Arjuna was tortured by his enemies, yet still, on the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra he said, “Kṛṣṇa, let me leave. I don’t want to kill them.”This is forgiveness. But now, even for a small insult people will kill. This is going on. Also, there is now no mercifulness (dayā). Even if you see someone being killed in front of you, you will not take interest. These things are happening already. So, religion, truthfulness, cleanliness, forgiveness, mercifulness, duration of life, bodily strength, and memory—these eight things will decrease, decrease, decrease, decrease. When you see these symptoms, you should know the age of Kali is making progress.

Some conclusions—When I was reading the lecture Prabhupada gave in LA and he was taking all the elements of one verse in SB about the actual human characteristics predicted to manifest later in kali yuga (we are now 5000 yrs into it),  I was thinking in particular about this one element of tolerance or forgiveness.
Over the years of hosting hundreds of Krsna conscious programs at our home ashram/temple, I have seen that many devotees become irritated quite easily over trifles if someone  irritates them or says something they don’t like. Even sometimes if you try to sugar coat a certain point of the philosophy, somebody will get angry or mad at you. And then they just leave the devotees association altogether, and where they go most don’t know. I imagine that some of them try to find another “devotee group” where their feelings wont get ruffled. And some of them just leave devotee association for good, thinking who knows what?

The Cultured man defined and what happens in kali yuga

June 26, 2021 in Articles by Damaghosa dasa

Hare Krsna-Below we have two separate conversation/ lectures. In the first and  very short one Srila Prabhupada explains the  three qualities of a culture man. It is very simple to understand yet  difficult to find in even one such person.
in the second lecture given in LA, he explains in exacting detail what the  conditions will become worldwide in this age. It is amazing how accurate this 5000 yr old prediction has become.
So after reading this, one conclusion is each of us has to decide which kind of person we want to become? A cultured gentleman or lady or an unfortunate inmate of kali yuga?
If we do not take this chanting of Hare Krsna maha mantra seriously we will be swept away by the ever present bad conditions of this present age in which we find ourselves.
Hare Krsna

mātṛvat para-dāreṣu
para-dravyeṣu loṣṭravat
ātmavat sarva-bhūteṣu

Here is culture. First thing is, any woman except one’s own wife.
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: :What is that, Śrīla Prabhupāda?
Prabhupāda: :Any woman should be looked upon as mother. This is culture. Except his married wife, all women should be treated as mother. The brahmacārīs were taught like that, “Mother.” This is culture. Simply they are trying to elope other’s wife, other’s woman, exploit them. And they’re cultured. There is no culture at the present moment.
Mātṛvat para-dāreṣu para-dravyeṣu loṣṭravat: “And others’ money should be treated just like pebbles in the street.” Nobody cares for it. So they are simply making plans how to grab others’ money. And Ātmavat sarva bhūteṣu: “And if you feel pains and pleasure, you should consider for others also.” If your throat is cut, then do you feel very happy? Why you are cutting the throats of the poor animals? Where is culture? There is no culture. Simply rogues and thieves and rascals and fools. Where is culture? They do not know what is the meaning of culture. Here is culture, three words:
mātṛvat para-dāreṣu
para-dravyeṣu loṣṭravat
ātmavat sarva-bhūteṣu
yaḥ paśyati sa paṇḍitaḥ
He is cultured.
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Otherwise just animal.
Prabhupāda: Simply animal.
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: It is very logical.
Devotee: Śrīla Prabhupāda, should we call all the women “mother”?
Prabhupāda: Yes. And treat it like mother. Not only call, but treat it like mother.
Harikeśa: Actually we have not even any idea how to treat mother.
Prabhupāda: Learn it. At least mother should not be proposed for sex. This much you can learn. Mātṛvat para-dāreṣu para-dravyeṣu loṣṭravat, ātmavat sarva-bhūteṣu. [break] …0

Now we shall read the predictions given in Srimad Bhagavatam 5000 yrs ago as to the conditions we are now seeing almost everywhere in the world.

SP defines the cultured man-and how to spot one

June 25, 2021 in Articles by Damaghosa dasa

Oct 25 1975 Mauritius conversations

Harikeśa: By chemically changing the genes in the living being we can, before conception, make a superior…
Prabhupāda: You can… First of all you be beaten with shoes. That’s all. Then you can.
Harikeśa: No, we’ve actually done it. We’ve changed some genes and made some people better. By experimentation we can make people…
Prabhupāda: And your big, big cities are full with hippies. You cannot induce them to give up their LSD, and you are making better men. Better men is going to become worse. Just see how cheating.

Note-the Moderna so called vaccine is so named to inform us that their shot is to make man a modern man-hence—moderna-modern RNA
Dont think these demons have given up on altering nature to suit their whims. And now they are trying to shoot everyone up with their latest gene altering concoctions

Harikeśa: Oh, you mean once we make the better men they’ll just degrade again.
Prabhupāda: Simply bogus propaganda. [break]
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: …that their educational system has failed. Therefore they…
Prabhupāda: Yes. They should close the universities and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: So by birth they want to make better men. They can’t make them by culture.
Prabhupāda: No, culture… They adopt real culture. What do they know about culture? They’re killing their own children in the womb, and they’re cultured? Worse than the animals. The animals do not do that. These rascals, they are cultured? So wretched and fallen, and they are claiming to be cultured.
Harikeśa: So you can’t culture a superior man unless you are one yourself.
Prabhupāda: Hm?
Harikeśa: It’s not possible to culture a superior man unless you are one yourself.
Prabhupāda: Yes. First of all be yourself a cultured man, a gentleman. You are worse than animals. What animals cannot do, you are doing. Hare Kṛṣṇa. [break] …man is defined by Cāṇakya Paṇḍit.
mātṛvat para-dāreṣu

So our main business is- how to improve Kṛṣṇa consciousness. -SP

June 23, 2021 in Articles by Damaghosa dasa

June 22 1969 New Vrndavana
So our main business is how to improve Kṛṣṇa consciousness. We should not divert our attention in any other material condition of improvement. That is actually not improvement. It is simply illusion, that “I am making improvement.” What improvement? Suppose you are earning now, say, five hundred dollars per month. If you earn, say, five million dollars, so then what? Will you eat more than four cāpāṭis? (laughter) You’ll eat the same four cāpāṭis. And you’ll occupy the same six feet bed. You may acquire the whole property of West Virginia, (laughter) but you’ll have to lie down on six feet. (laughter) That’s all. And you’ll have to eat four cāpāṭis. So this is māyā. This is māyā, “I am improving.” What you are improving? You’ll not be taller. You’ll not be great eater, nothing of the sort. Whatever you have already, you’ll have so the same thing. You see?

and life goes on, despite our insignificant efforts to change or alter it…..

3 weeks ago, below, in our garden #1

today—pole beans, peas, brassicas, radishes, spinach, kolhrabi, rutabhaga,
coriander, summer and winter squash,  pear and apple trees,..etc etc….

Quotes on Simple living high thinking

740524r2.rom                Conversations …  Yes, naturally. If this man is fed up with  this industry, he cango back to village and  produce his own food. But he is attachedto this industrial  activity because he is thinking that “We are getting more money for wine and  woman and meat.Let me enjoy.” That is the perfect, imp… But  if he chants Hare Krsna maha-mantra, hisconsciousness  will be purified and he will bemade not interestedthiskind of work.He will go back to village  andproduce food.
——————
740525mw.rom                Conversations …  That is yajna. So in the Kali-yuga the yajna is made  very easy. Chant Hare Krsna. So anywhere you go, chant Hare Krsna, and see  that there will be clouds, there will be rainfall, and just work  little, you get your foodgrains, and chant Hare  Krsna.
——————
740524r2.rom                 Conversations                           1/1 eatables to the animals and to the men, then everything is  prosperous. So where is that arrangement? There is enough land,  enough possibility, enough water. Now utilize them and produce food  grain, eat nicely and live peacefully and chant Hare  Krsna and go back tohome, back to Godhead. This is our  philosophy. Why there should be industry? You want to eat after  all. Instead of eating this flesh, killing poor animals, why don’t you  produce food grains, fruits, flowers, food grain, and take milk from the  animals and produce milk products, all nutritious food, all nice food, and be  happy and remember God for His kindness. This is  civilization. What is this nonsense civilization? Now there is  petrol problem.I see so many buses, and not a single man, one or two men.  And for two men a big huge bus is being run, and so much petrol is consumed  unnecessarily. I have seen.I went from Nairobi to London in a  plane–only five passengers. Out of that, four passengers we were. Why?  Why this nonsense? And there is petrol problem now. They are creating  simply, the so-called advancement of civilization, creating problems,  that’s all.And that is due to these rascal leaders. Andha  yathandhair upaniyamanas te ‘pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah. They do not  know what is the ideal of life, what is the aim of life. They are  creating
hodge-podge  civilization and putting the mass of people in chaoticcondition.  This is the sum and substance. I do not know whether  you’llagreed with me, but this is my study of the whole  situation.
——————————
740525mw.rom                ConversationsPrabhupada: Yes.  (break) …encouraging inour societyto take to agriculture to  support this center. I am purchasing land in Vrndavana and Mayapura to become self-sufficient. Whatever production you make, you  be satisfied. Little vegetable, little grain and little milk. That is  sufficient.
——————————
740525mw.rom                Conversations Prabhupada: Yes, that was Gandhi’s philosophy, village  organization. These people, they are attracting villagers to work in the  factory, and they are exploiting them…. our philosophy. Make your  life successful.By becoming Krsna conscious, you become free from  allthese troubles of material  condition. This is our education. Don’t be after these  motorcars, television, and all nonsense things, sporting, wine, women. Don’t  be after these.Simply eat sufficiently, keep  yourhealth nicely, chant Hare Krsna, realize Krsna, and  go back  to home This is our  philosophy…
———————— 740525mw.rom                ConversationsPrabhupada: Stick to your own place and grow your food. There is  no question of transport. Little transport is required, that bullock cart.  Krsna was being carried on bullock cart. There is no use of petrol. Use  simply the bull. They are already there. Utilize them.
————————
740527mw.rom                 Conversations                 363471/53050 Dhananjaya:So in fact, Srila Prabhupada, we should start  using bullock carts.Prabhupada: Yes.No, first of all you  start the community project, aswe have already started  in New Vrindaban. Make this  perfect.——————————
740527mw.rom1/2newspaper, nonsense  newspaper, huge, huge quantity? So everything will be nice provided you  become ideal. Live in community.Produce your  ownfood. Even you can produce your own  paper. You don’t require printing of so many books. If there is one book,  others can …
————————–
740527mw.rom                Conversations …Keep amongst yourself and produce. Produce  foodgrain, produce cotton, mustard seed.  Self dependent, no use… And we don’t require motorcar. Bullock cart is  sufficient. There is no need of going  anywhere…
————————–
740527mw.rom                Conversations Prabhupada: No, no. These varieties… Suppose you grow half a  dozen different types of vegetables. So from this half a dozen you  can makethree dozen varieties. If you are a good  cooker. So the varieties  ofenjoyment will be fulfilled. We have got some  desire of differentquality of varieties. That you can make.  From milk, vegetable, grains, the three things,  youcan make three hundred  varieties.
 —————————
740527mw.rom                Conversations Prabhupada: Yes, it will go on, but when they will see that  your ideal community is better than city life, people will take to it.  Param drstva nivartate. When one gets a better standard of life,  naturallyhe will give up the lower standard of  life.
—————————–
740528mw.rom                Conversations  So you have toset up real human society in a  small scaleso people will see, “Yes.” Because man has got  intelligence. Just like, although I am … my preaching. So why you are  coming? So if you stick to yourposition, real  human civilization, people will come, gradually. Because they  have got the sense….
————————
740528mw.rom                Conversations Prabhupada: No, there is no question of extended. You keep  yourself in a limited solution. And then, when it is appreciated it will  be automatically extended. You don’t touch the extended. You become  idealcivilized man. Others will  follow.

How to defeat the enemies of the Lord? – Explained by Śrīla Prabhupāda

How to defeat the enemies of the Lord? – Explained by Śrīla PrabhupādaCaitanya Caritāmṛta,1973 Edition, Ādi lila, Volume 2, Chapter 7,Lord Caitanya in Five Features, Text 99:prabhura miṣṭa-vākya śuni’ sannyāsīra gaṇacitta phiri’ gela, kahe madhura vacana
prabhura—of the Lord; miṣṭa-vākya—sweet words; śuni’—after hearing; sannyāsīra gaṇa—all the groups of sannyāsīs; citta—consciousness; phiri’—moved; gela—went; kahe—said; madhura—pleasing; vacana—words. TranslationAfter hearing Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, all the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs were moved. Their minds changed, and thus they spoke with pleasing words. Purport
The Māyāvādī sannyāsīs met Caitanya Mahāprabhu at Vārāṇasī to criticize the Lord regarding His participation in the saṅkīrtana movement, which they did not like. This demonic nature of opposition to the saṅkīrtana movement perpetually exists. As it existed in the time of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, similarly it existed long before that, even in the time of Prahlāda Mahārāja. He used to chant in saṅkīrtana although his father did not like it, and that was the reason for the misunderstanding between the father and son. In the Bhagavad-gītā (Bg. 7.15) the Lord says: na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāhprapadyante narādhamāḥmāyayāpahṛta-jñānāāsuraṁ bhāvam āśritāḥ“Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me.” The Māyāvādī sannyāsīs are āsuraṁ bhāvam āśritāḥ, which means that they have taken the path of the asuras (demons), who do not believe in the existence of the form of the Lord. The Māyāvādīs say that the ultimate source of everything is impersonal, and in this way they deny the existence of God. Saying that there is no God is direct denial of God, and saying that God exists but has no head, legs or hands and cannot speak, hear or eat is a negative way of denying His existence. A person who cannot see is called blind, one who cannot walk can be called lame, one who has no hands can be called helpless, one who cannot speak can be called dumb, and one who cannot hear can be called deaf. The Māyāvādīs’ proposition that God has no legs, no eyes, no ears and no hands is an indirect way of insulting Him by defining Him as blind, deaf, dumb, lame, helpless, etc. Therefore although they present themselves as great Vedāntists, they are factually māyayāpahṛta-jñāna; in other words, they seem to be very learned scholars, but the essence of their knowledge has been taken away. Impersonalist Māyāvādīs always try to defy Vaiṣṇavas because Vaiṣṇavas accept the Supreme Personality as the supreme cause and want to serve Him, talk with Him and see Him, just as the Lord is also eager to see His devotees and talk, eat and dance with them. These personal exchanges of love do not appeal to the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs. Therefore the original purpose of the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs of Benares in meeting Caitanya Mahāprabhu was to defeat His personal conception of God. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, however, as a preacher, turned the minds of the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs. They were melted by the sweet words of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and thus became friendly and spoke to Him also in sweet words. Similarly, all preachers will have to meet opponents, but they should not make them more inimical. They are already enemies, and if we talk with them harshly or impolitely their enmity will merely increase. We should therefore follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu as far as possible and try to convince the opposition by quoting from the śāstras and presenting the conclusion of the ācāryas. It is in this way that we should try to defeat all the enemies of the Lord.

Immortal Charity: Srila Prabhupada’s Gift to the World

June 20, 2021 in Articles by Laksman dasa

Immortal Charity:

Srila Prabhupada’s Gift to the World

By Narasimha das

O spotless one, your answers to all these questions will grant immunity from all material miseries. Such charity is greater than all Vedic charities, sacrifices, penances and so on.  (Srimad-Bhagavatam, 3.7.41)

“The highest perfectional work of charity is to give people in general immunity from the anxieties of material existence. This can be done only by performing activities in devotional service to the Lord. Such knowledge is incomparable. Cultivation of knowledge in the Vedas, performance of sacrifice, and distribution of munificent charities all together cannot form even a part of the immunity from the pangs of material existence that is gained from devotional service. The charity of Maitreya not only will help Vidura, but, due to its universal nature, will deliver all others in all times. Thus, Maitreya is immortal.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.7.41, Purport)

In this section of Srimad-Bhagavatam, the great saint Vidura raises many questions to Maitreya Rishi. His aim was to point out the principles of transcendental loving service to the Lord. He knew that by this understanding anyone, past, present or future, will be liberated from the miseries of material existence and return to the spiritual world via the methods of pure devotion.

Sripada Baladeva Vidyabhusana Tirobhava Tithi [disappearance day]Sunday, June 20, 2021  [Mayapur, West Bengal, Bharata Bhumi time]

Compiled by Yasoda nandana dasa

Srila Prabhupada explains how Sri Baladeva Vidyabhusana wrote the Gaudiya-Bhasya on the Vedanta-sutras.

But sometimes back, in Jaipur, there was a challenge that “The Gauḍīya Sampradāya has no commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra.” So, at that time Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura was requested… Because he was grand scholar, grand old man scholar, at that time living in Vṛndāvana… So, he was very old at that time; so he authorized Baladeva Vidyābhūṣana, that “You do it.” There was no need, but people are demanding, “Where is your commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra?” So Baladeva Vidyābhūṣana, with the order of Govindaji at Jaipur, he wrote the commentary on Brahma-sūtra. That name is Govinda-bhāṣya. So, the Gauḍīya-Brahmā Sampradāya, they have got also commentary on Brahma-sūtra. That is required. Srila Prabhupada on useless philanthropy – “We have seen practical, in India
many sannyāsīs, they elevate themselves by jñāna-kāṇḍa,
but because they cannot stay, they again come to the karma-kāṇḍa,
philanthropy activities and hospitals and schools. That is their falldown. “

Hare Krsna. All glories to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.Srila Prabhupada quotes on useless philanthropy:So by karma-kāṇḍa you can elevate yourself to the higher planetary system. Even it is properly done . . . And now it is not possible to do it properly. And even it is properly done, that is condemned. It is not required. Similarly jñāna-kāṇḍa, even it is properly done. You can merge yourself into the Brahman effulgence. But that is also not safe, because in the śāstra we see that arūhya kṛcchreṇa paraṁ padaṁ tataḥ patanty adhaḥ (SB 10.2.32). Even one merges oneself into the impersonal Brahman, he again falls down. Patanty adhaḥ. We have seen practical, in India many sannyāsīs, they elevate themselves by jñāna-kāṇḍa, but because they cannot stay, they again come to the karma-kāṇḍa, philanthropy activities and hospitals and schools. That is their falldown.

Srila Prabhupada speaks – “This conception of caste on the basis of birthright has killed the Vedic culture. “

Srila Prabhupada speaks – “This conception of caste
on the basis of birthright has killed the Vedic culture.”

Our movement is for everyone. It is not sectarian. When we speak of no intoxication, it is meant for everyone. You should always remember the statement of Caitanya Mahaprabhu:
yei bhaje sei bada abhakta-hina chara“Anyone who takes to devotional service is exalted, whereas a nondevotee is always condemned and abominable. Therefore in the discharge of devotional service of the Lord, there is no consideration service of the Lord, there is no consideration of the status of one’s family.” [Cc. Antya 4.67].
The devotee is great and the nondevotee is downtrodden. And in the matter of devotional service of Krishna, there is no concern of caste and creed. Krsna also says, mam hi partha vyapasritya ye’pi syuh pata-yonayayah [Bg. 9.32]. Even the papa-yonayayah, if he takes to devotional service, he also goes back to Home, Back-to-Godhead. This conception of caste on the basis of birthright has killed the Vedic culture. Also in the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said:yasya yallaksanam proktampuso varnabhivyanjakam,
yadanyatrapi drsyeta
tat tenaiva vinirdiset
[SB 7.11.35]So despite all these things, these people are still insisting that one can only be Vaisnava if born in a brahmana family. That is not a very learned position.
[Srila Prabhupada Letter. ,24 June, 1976]
English SynonymsDurjati-low caste, eba-only, sabana-sacrifice, ayogyatwe-in the matter of disqualification, karanam-cause, malam-concluded, durjati-low caste, arambhakam-beginning of, eba-alone, papam-vice, yat-that which is, prarabdham-current, tat-that.TranslationLow caste birth is the concluded cause only for disqualification in the matter of taking part in the execution of sacrifices. Therefore the low caste is the beginning of current result of past vices.PurportThe rigidity of caste system according to the law of Karma is undoubtedly very scientific and the Vedic shastras which accept this divisions of castes are right in that scientific estimation. It does not however mean that a low caste born man cannot rise up to the standard of a qualified Brahmin. It depends on the undaunted desire of the candidate for rising up to that standard. Those who are supporters of the caste system by birth right only are as much mistaken as those who fight to dismantle the scientific institution of caste system without being qualified for the purpose. Here is a right adjustment for the two opposite schools in the matter of supporting and breaking the caste system respectively. In the Bhagwat Geeta it is admitted that the caste system is a scientific plan made by the Personality of Godhead Himself. He does not however give much stress on the point of birth right because for a devotee of the Personality of Godhead the birth right of caste system is quite immaterial. What is the difference between a born Brahmin and born Chandala? It is the difference of the material semen only. The body is made out of the semen of the father and in the case of a born Brahmin it is taken for acceptance that the semen is pure while in the case of the chandala the semen is impure. Purity and impurity of the semen depend also on the purity of the father in respect of his daily habits in life. It depends on the quality of the foodstuffs the father takes. Dr. Barnard Shaw said that you are what you eat. Therefore even to the modern man it depends on the eating of a man to constitute the different secretion of the bodily glands. This is a vast subject however not to be dealt with here but our point of discussion is that a man even born of a Chandala semen it does not make any barrier for his rising up to the plane of pure Brahmin provided he has adopted the devotional services of the Lord under bonafide guidance of the spiritual master. As stated in the stanza 20 the devotional service is like the blazing fire and therefore it is able to purify even impure birth semen of the Chandala if he is in the line. One may argue that in order to change the impure blood in the body of Chandala it will be necessary for him to wait for the change of the body. But SrilaJiva Goswami who is one of the authorised Acharya by Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu answers this question very saliently as follows:-“Children of the Brahmin family may be freed from the vice which causes the low caste birth but to become qualified for the office of performing sacrifices such children have to undergo the process of pious actions like the second birth by initiation from an Acharya generally known as the sacred thread ceremony. This means that the Chandala has to wait for the next birth in the family of a Brahmin as much as the Brahmin boy has to wait for the thread ceremony for the particular office. It may be an argumentative point that even though a Chandala on account of his pure devotional service is freed from the vice which caused his birth in the Chandala family yet according to social custom a Chandala born man cannot be allowed to have the facility of second birth by thread ceremony. But that sort of argument is invalid in the presence of evidence of the Shastras. It is clearly mentioned that such devotee becomes at once eligible for the purpose.”He becomes at once pure and cleansed of all vices of his previous birth and thereby he becomes at once venerable as much as a qualified Brahmin. By dint of his actual activities in the devotional line under the guidance of a bonafide Acharya he is at once washed of all sins and therefore this example is quite appropriate with reference to the context that a devotee of Vasudeva has nothing like inauspicity. He is transcendental to all the bodily reactions of birth, death, old age and diseases.SrilaBhaktiSiddhanta Saraswati Thakur a powerful Acharya as SrilaJiva Goswami in the recent years (1918-1936) reformed the Goudiya Vaishnava association by establishment of the Goudiya Math establishment which institute initiates all persons without any caste and creed distinction and gives them the right of a qualified Brahmin by initiation in terms of the Haribhaktivilas an authorised law book compiled by Srila Sanatan Goswami. Lord Chaitanya wanted that everybody from all corners of the world shall be initiated in the cult of Bhakti as it is propounded by Him and the Gaudiya Math institution has taken up the initiative action on this behalf very timely. Solution of all problems like the dissolution of the caste system and other similar social movement can actually take a valid form only under the auspicious direction of the Goswamins. All contending elements of the world problems can be easily mitigated by the blessings of Lord Chaitanya if the path is followed strictly under direction of the Goswamins headed by SrilaRupa Goswami the author of the Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu.

Srila Prabhupada speaks – “In future you don’t do any changes without asking me first.”

“No, the printing of the Gitar-gan cover this fashion is not at all approved by me. You have done most nonsensically. Why change the cover? When people look to see the Bhagavad-gita they expect to see Krishna and Arjuna, not the picture of Krishna with cow. You have done a great mistake by changing the front picture and it will hamper the sale. In future you don’t do any changes without asking me first.

Simply because there is no stock of books, we can do anything whimsically???
Is this logic? Gita is not spoken in Vrindaban, it is spoken on the battlefield of Kuruksetra, but this is Vrindaban picture. That chariot driven by 4 horses, that is the real Kuruksetra picture. It is not that because there is no stock we can do whimsically as we like and lose the idea, that is rasa-bhasa. Because there is no bread, you take stone to eat? There is no stock of bread so you will take stone??? The front picture is most important thing and you have changed it. It must remain standard, and not change. Also, the lettering is not nice on the cover. You could have taken a color picture of Krishna and Arjuna and used it black and white (one color) on the front cover. Just as you did with the inside back cover of the Bhagavat darsana, the original picture of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was in color but you have printed it in black and white. You could have done this on the front cover with Krishna and Arjuna on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, but the cover must not be changed.
