Srila Prabhupada re: the definition of a demon

March 5, 2017 in Aprakrita dasa by Yasoda nandana dasa

Every morning, a different devotee comes up to Paradisio to visit Swamiji for a day. Although there is no formal initiation ritual or fire sacrifice, Swamiji chants on the initiates’ beads and bestows spiritual names: Aniruddha, Uddhava, Murari, Devananda.
One day, when Janaki visits, she takes exception to the painting of Lord Nrishingadev tearing out the entrails of the demon Hiranyakashipu. “It’s really ghastly, Swamiji, she says, making a face.
“For the devotees, it is beautiful,” he says. “The devotee praises Lord Nrishingadev: dalita hiranyakashipu tanu bhringam. ‘With the nails of Your beautiful hands, you have torn apart this wasp-like demon.’ Hiranyakashipu was such a great demon that he even tried to kill his small son, Prahlad Maharaj, just because he was a devotee. So the Lord killed Hiranyakashipu to protect His devotee and liberate the demon.”
“But there are no such demons now, Swamiji,” Janaki says.
“Oh yes,” Swamiji says. “Demon means nondevotee.”
“Maybe we shouldn’t call them demons,” Kirtanananda suggests. “People will never come if we call them demons.”
“But they are demons,” Swamiji says. “If you are not a devotee, you’re a demon.”
“Aren’t most people somewhere in between?” Kirtanananda persists.
“‘In between’ means demon,” Swamiji says.
“But most people never heard of Krishna,” Kirtanananda says. “How can they be called demons?”
“Everyone has heard of God,” Swamiji says. “Krishna is God. Anyway, they may be innocent; therefore we are informing them. But actually, because they’re here in this material world, they are not really innocent. Somehow, they’ve chosen to forget Krishna, and are therefore demons.”
“I thought that in Krishna consciousness, you see Krishna in everyone,” Kirtanananda says.
“Yes,” Swamiji says, “Krishna is also in the demon. But does this mean that we aspire to be demons? Unless you distinguish between demons and devotees, you cannot progress in Krishna consciousness.”

What does it mean to be God Conscious??? A pop quiz by Srila Prabhupada

What does it mean to be Krsna Conscious??
Dec 10 1975 Vrndavana conversation-–
Hare Krsna-below is a very nice conversation where Srila Prabhupada sets us straight about what it means to be Krsna or God Conscious. If any of us were there during this pop quiz session, then I am sure many other answers could have been given and maybe even one may have been correct.
One amazing quality of Srila Prabhupada was his ability to make seemingly complex things very easy to understand.  We make things difficult, and the bona fide spiritual master makes it all clear-if we are willing to continually hear in a submissive mood from him

“This is the Param Para system”–SP

March 5, 2017 in Damaghosa Dasa by Damaghosa dasa

Madhya TEXTS  17.48-49
keha yadi tāṅra mukhe śune kṛṣṇa-nāma
tāṅra mukhe āna śune tāṅra mukhe āna
sabe ‘kṛṣṇa’ ‘hari’ bali’ nāce, kānde, hāse
paramparāya ‘vaiṣṇava’ ha-ila sarva deśe
TRANSLATION–When someone heard the chanting of the holy name from the mouth of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and someone else heard this chanting from that second person, and someone again heard this chanting from the third person, everyone in all countries became a Vaiṣṇava through such disciplic succession. Thus everyone chanted the holy name of Kṛṣṇa and Hari, and they danced, cried and smiled.
PURPORT
The transcendental power or potency of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra is herein explained. First, the holy name is vibrated by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. When someone hears from Him directly, he is purified. When another person hears from that person, he also is purified. In this way the purification process is advanced among pure devotees. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and no one can claim His potency. Nonetheless, if one is a pure devotee, hundreds and thousands of men can be purified by his vibration. This potency is within every living being, provided he chants the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra offenselessly and without material motives. When a pure devotee chants offenselessly, another person will become a Vaiṣṇava, and from him another Vaiṣṇava will emerge. This is the paramparā system.

“Krsna Consciousness is based on pure understanding not sentimental provocation”-SP

March 5, 2017 in Damaghosa Dasa by Damaghosa dasa

Regarding propaganda against animal slaughter in BTG (Back to Godhead) magazine, please do not print any picture showing how a cow is being murdered in our BTG. This will pollute the whole atmosphere. We are not meant for moving anyone’s sentiment against animal slaughter, we are neither Buddhists or Jains, whose main propaganda is against animal slaughter. Even the so-called vegetarians who do not take Krishna prasadam are as much sinful as the non-vegetarians.

the condition of one in Love with Krsna

March 5, 2017 in Damaghosa Dasa by Damaghosa dasa

Krsna Book 2-29…three little tidbits of nectar from this one chapter in Krsna Book….
“When a person dreams at night, hallucinatory figures created by the dream are accepted as real, and the imaginary dream body is accepted as one’s real body. For the time being one forgets that besides the body created in hallucination, there is another, real body in his awakened state. Similarly, in the awakened state also, the bewildered conditioned soul considers sense enjoyment to be real happiness.
(Note-there are 4 platforms of consciousness-the sensual (bodily) mental, intellectual and spiritual. If we are not liberated, then we exist somewhere in these 3 preliminary stages of material consciouness. Which means we take these three illusory levels to be-real happiness)

“Dear Lord, the Vedic knowledge is the representation of Your pure heart. Austerities, study of the Vedas, and meditative trances lead to different realizations of Your Self in Your manifested and nonmanifested aspects.

The members of the Yadu dynasty tried to satisfy Nanda Mahārāja and his associates by offering them clothing, ornaments, and many other valuable articles, and they all became fully satisfied. Vasudeva, Ugrasena, Lord Kṛṣṇa, Lord Balarāma, Uddhava and all other members of the Yadu dynasty presented their individual gifts to Nanda Mahārāja and his associates. After Nanda Mahārāja received these farewell presentations, he, along with his associates, started for Vrajabhūmi, Vṛndāvana. The minds of the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana remained, however, with Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma,  and therefore all of them started for Vrndavana without their minds.

Service-when is it for Krsna and when is it for Maya?

March 5, 2017 in Damaghosa Dasa by Damaghosa dasa

Hare Krsna
Question- If some devotee does some tangible service, in good Krsna consciousness for some years, but later comes under the spell of maya, disobeying his guru, what is the result of his later “service”.?
If he is not presently following all the orders of the bona fide spiritual master but thinks he is, does his service count still as real devotional service? Or is it something else? This is the question I want to explore.
First of all, I am in no personal position to judge anybody on my own merits, and the only yardstick of understanding I have been taught is –sastra sadhu and guru. So on that basis alone I wish to explore this above question.
Some devotees say that even if someone is in some sort of maya, then still whatever they are doing or have done for “Srila Prabhupada” is still counted as bhakti and is valuable . And we should not criticize that “service” because it was done with good intent.
Let’s look at what Srila Prabhupada has to say about this.
The first example is , let us say, a well known devotee who has done a lot in terms of bhakti yoga. He originally was part of the Jayapataka camp and took initiation from him and worked under him for some 20 years.
Later he rejected him and came to understand that Srila Prabhupada was in fact his real guru and not Jayapataka swami. When this same devotee was asked if he made advancement while in that “unauthorized guru camp” he says yes, and he also says that those still there serving under non authorized iskcon gurus are also making advancement. So this same devotee has already denounced  his former status as a Jayapatka disciple saying their entire initiation system was a hoax, and now believes that the only system to be followed is the one outlined by Srila Prabhupada, specifically in his July 9th letter.

pulling the weeds of material desire out of the heart

March 5, 2017 in Damaghosa Dasa by Damaghosa dasa

Getting rid of unwanted weeds in the heart—

Below we have a fairly good look at what happens to the practicing Hare Krsna devotee who does not take care to observe and stop any or all offenses he or she may be making in the process of trying to cleanse his or her heart, by chanting Hare Krsna maha mantra.

The very first item is a conversation with Srila Prabhupada where he explains that to chant Hare Krsna (like for a professional musician ) is very nice, but for that chanting to become more effective it has to be done within the actual process recommended by our Acaryas-otherwise, if we know about this process and still avoid correcting ourselves, then those knowingly committed offenses will eventually curtail what ever growth we have made by that same chanting. Many warnings below by Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaja, and others.

The last section warns us also to avoid those persons who pose as Vaisnavas yet are very jealous of the success given by the Lord to other devotees. There are so many things (offenses to chanting) that could be elaborated upon, but I chose only a couple just to keep this article somewhat brief. One could probably write books upon this one subject only, it is so important.

Srila Prabhupada has said many things on this subject of offenses to chanting. One of them is this-dont be surprised who comes, but be surprised who stays”. By this I take it to mean that so many will be attracted to Krsna, which is natural, but to stay with it, and not leave means we have to become vigilant in our consciousness and daily lives. Anybody who has been “around” for several decades and associated with this Hare Krsna Movement has seen so many come and so many leave. We should never think that this won’t happen to us.

Some interesting points from Krsna Book stories

March 5, 2017 in Damaghosa Dasa by Damaghosa dasa

Hare Krsna-Below are some very  interesting statements from Krsna Book Vol 2 where different parts of our philosophy are explained nicely.
1.King Yudhisthira wanted to establish that Lord Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and not just some extra ordinary super human being.
2.One who satisfies Gods senses, then his own senses becomes satisfied.
3.Someone who is materially opulent (the western world compared to the eastern “underdeveloped” ones) if he does not use all that opulence in the service of the Lord, then his downfall is certain.
4.When one exists on the mental plane then he doesnt live on the transcendental plane but the on the material planes of wakefulness, sleep and deep sleep.
5.people who simply offer their obeisances to the Deity in the temple but do not see the Lord in everyone’s heart are unable to see the importance of devotees and sages in general. But when one is promoted to the next  stage of transcendental understanding, then he or she tries to please the devotees.
6.All conditioned souls want to lord it over material resources and thus everyone wants riches, good spouse, children, position in society and be happy in this world. These things are the cause of our bondage.
7. Krsna is present throughout the universe in His diverse energies and if we cannot see or understand this fact, then we remain in the continuous chains of fruitive activities with no hope of release.

liberation simply by seeing the Ratha Cart of Lord Jagannath

March 5, 2017 in Articles, Damahosa Dasa by Yasoda nandana dasa

Devotee: Prabhupāda, can you explain a little more about Ratha-yātrā? Anyone who takes part in Ratha-yātrā, are they liberated?
Prabhupāda: Certainly.
Devotee: Does that mean they will not take birth again?
Prabhupāda: Yes. Yes, provided they take it seriously. Otherwise, if they keep their mentality differently, then according to mind, one has to get a body. But… Just like so many boys. They come here in the beginning out of curiosity, but gradually, they get the chance of becoming devotee. Similarly, if they take the chance, then they will be liberated. They come out of curiosity, but if they take it seriously, then they will be liberated. Just like hospital is meant for curing disease. So one should take the treatment. If he simply goes and visits the hospital and thinks “Now I am cured,” how it can be done? Hospital is a… Suppose if I advertise that “Anyone who comes to this hospital, he will be cured of his disease,” that’s a fact. But if he thinks that “I have come here. Now I am going,” then how he will be cured? To see Jagannātha on the Ratha-yātrā, his way for liberation is open, but if he comes back again and entangles himself, then? One goes to the doctor. He gives injection. The disease is cured. But again he comes back and does the same thing so that he develops this disease again. So whose fault it is? This is called hasti-snāna. Hasti-snāna. The elephant takes bath very nicely, and as soon as comes on the bank of the river or the lake, he takes dust and throws it over body again. If we do that, then we shall remains always dirty. You go, take bath, cleanse, but don’t take dirt again. That is not going on. They become immediately mukta, liberated, but they come, again becomes entangled. If it is a fact seeing Jagannātha is mukta, that’s all… He becomes mukta. But if he again comes to māyā, then who can check him? Just like you are all on the path of liberation, but if you again come back to māyā, then where is your liberation? Why Jagannātha in the ratha here? If somebody comes here and sees his path for liberation is open… Now he should protect himself. Just like disease, fever is subsided. Now one should be careful not to relapse the fever. That care is in my hand, everyone’s hands. And if you become prone to be relapsed again, then again the same thing. Just like in Christian church they confess. Of course, that is the injunction. That’s all right. After confessing, the sins are excused. That’s a fact. But if he comes back, again commits the same, then where is the effect? But they are happy in that way. They are… “After one week, I shall go to the church and confess my sins. Then everything will be neutralized.” This is all right. Suppose on Sunday you become free from all contamination of your sinful activities. And Monday you again do the same thing. So you become again contaminated. And, say, on Tuesday if you die, then you are dying with sins. Is it not? Then what is your condition? If the God or Christ excused you of your sinful life, that’s all right. But when you come back, you don’t commit again sin. Then you are all right. But we have taken it as a business that we go to Sunday, neutralize our sins, and come back again and do the same thing. So from logical point of view, suppose you do the same sinful activities, and if you die immediately, then you die with sinful activities, go to hell. What benefit you derive by confessing in the church? This business is going on. “Now I have seen Jagannātha. My liberation is guaranteed. Now I can do anything.” That’s all. This mentality. This mentality will not give you liberation. You have seen Jagannātha, your sinful activities are now neutralized, but don’t commit again. Now make progress. Then your liberation is guaranteed. Is it clear?
Nāmnāṁ balād yasya hi pāpa-buddhiḥ. In every initiation we teach this, that chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, once chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, is sufficient to make us pure from all sinful activities, reaction. But if we commit sin again in the hope that “Because I am chanting, this will be neutralized,” that is the greatest sin. So one side, you should chant always Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra so that you may not fall down; another side, you should be careful: “Now no illicit sex life, no intoxication, no meat-eating.” In this way, if you carefully make progress, then your liberation is guaranteed. Just like doctor. If you go to a doctor for treatment of a disease, he gives you medicine; at the same time, he prohibits you, “Don’t do this.” So you take medicine and don’t do this. Follow this instruction. You are cured, guaranteed. But if you don’t follow the “don’t do this,” and don’t take the medicine regularly, then how you can expect cure? It may be, but it will take long time. But if you want quick, take it seriously. Just like Dhruva Mahārāja. In six months he saw God, in six months. That is possible. You follow? (aside:) Stop. I shall say. So if we don’t follow the regulative principle and the instruction, then our liberation will be delayed. Otherwise it is guaranteed.

Srila Prabhupada predicted that even by 1980 majority of population could chant Hare Krsna

March 5, 2017 in Damaghosa Dasa by Damaghosa dasa

Hare Krsna

This morning I was reading in the collected teachings book Vol #5—where Srila Prabhupada was saying that it is not astonishing that even by 1980 the majority of the population could be chanting Hare Krsna mantra. He said this on April 16 1972. So as many of us all know he left us on  Nov 14th 1977 externally due to poisoning by his closest “associates” . Some  astrologers have said that he could have lived for 6-7 more years beyond 1977, so we can just only imagine what could or should have happened if this nasty and highly offensive event had not taken place.
