Some of the Changes to Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad-Gita As It Is


The changing of Srila Prabhupada's books has been an ongoing and ever-increasing concern in the devotee community particularly since his original 1970 unabridged Macmillian Bhagavd-gita As It Is was revised and enlarged in 1983 - six years after he left this world.  Even while he was physically present, much to his displeasure, increasingly unauthorized corrections and changes were showing up in reprints of his already published books.  While some of his editors at that time were taking inches and even yards, we now have editors who are taking spectacular miles.  The following presentation shows just a fraction of the nearly five thousand changes made to Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad-gita As It Is.

Letter to Krsna das

One has to hear the message of Godhead from the lips of the pure devotee of the Lord or Acarya. The religion is originally spoken by Krsna Himself and that message or science is coming down directly through the chain of disciplic succession and one who is in that chain is called acarya or one who teaches by his life. Religion is practically presented by the bona fide spiritual master or acarya.

The next point is philosophy without religion is mental speculation. No one can manufacture a system of religion. Religion is the Law of God and no one but God or empowered representatives of God can put forward religious formulas. Therefore, because every living entity is the eternal fragmental part and parcel of God, it is practical that by simply accepting the authorized statements of bona fide scripture without mental speculation or fashionable interpretation one fulfills the mission of human life very easily and goes back to home, back to Godhead.

Making Friends at the Vegetarian Expo
Last weekend devotees from the Hare Krishna Society attended the second annual "Christchurch Vegetarian Expo." This years Expo, being larger than the previous one, attracted people from a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds. Here in Christchurch we operate three cafes, all in the inner city and are therefore well known to "The Christchurch Vegetarian Society" who organized the Expo. Earlier in the year we also hosted an evening at our "Krishna Café" for those who participated in a Vegan Triathlon.

Leading up to the Expo we spent many long hours in the kitchen preparing and cooking traditional Indian food as well as vegan pies, filled breads, cakes, ginger crunch, burfi, sweet balls, etc, and also offered a wide range of organic drinks. The Krishna food stand ‘Soul Food’ soon became the most popular place for good eating and devotees worked non-stop for six hours serving out delicious Krishna prasadam to the enthusiastic crowds. This Expo gives great exposure to our cafes, allowing many new people to discover the higher experience of food offered to Lord Krishna.

A Scientific Method for Evaluating  Changes to Srila Prabhupada's Books

(Letter to Rupanuga, 2/17/70) Previous evaluations of the editorial changes focused on descriptions of the changes and references to pre-publication drafts rather than a factual quantification and comparative philosophical analysis. This article presents a scientific evaluation of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is and the Teachings of Lord Caitanya. The results demonstrate if the revised editions followed Srila Prabhupada's editorial policy and if they are genuine, authentic revisions that preserve the original content, philosophy and style.

Bali Maharaja appreciated the actions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although all the members of the demoniac families except Prahlada Maharaja and Bali Maharaja considered Visnu their eternal traditional enemy. The author of Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita most emphatically gives stress on the point that Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Shri Krishna Himself. Lord Chaitanya is not an expansion of Prabhava or Vilasha form of Shri Krishna but He is the Swayam Rupa Govinda. I have tried to explain clearly

In my books I have tried to explain clearly this simultaneously one and different philosophy acinta beda beda tattva propounded by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

But sometimes it happens that this philosophy is given a self-interested interpretation. As soon as personal motivation comes in it is not possible for one to understand our Krishna Consciousness philosophy.

Srila Prabhupada used to like to sit in his garden in Vrindavan especially in the mornings. He liked to hear his books read to him daily. One time Yasodanandan Prabhu was reading Sri Isopanisad when Srila Prabhupada stopped him and asked him to reread the last paragraph. After hearing it again Srila Prabhupada said, "Those are not my words! They are changing my words! Is my English not good enough?" Srila Prabhupada became very angry and continued, "This is the worst thing a disciple can do! Do not become like a leap frog and try to jump over the spiritual master thinking you know better than him. Tell them immediately [the editors] do not change my words!"

"… Our business is to present the will of Krsna, not that of any mundane speculator like the politician, philosopher or scientist, for they have very little knowledge of Krsna, despite all their other knowledge. When Krsna says, man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī mām namaskuru, etc., we, unlike the so-called scholars, do not say that Krsna and His inner spirit are different. Krsna is absolute, and there is no difference between Krsna's name, Krsna's form, Krsna's quality, Krsna's pastimes, etc. This absolute position of Krsna is difficult to understand for any person who is not a devotee of Krsna in the paramparā (disciplic succession) system. Generally the so-called scholars, politicians, philosophers, and svāmīs, without perfect knowledge of Krsna, try to banish or kill Krsna when writing commentary on Bhagavad-gītā…"

'Everyone should be friendly for the service of the Lord. Everyone should praise another's service to the Lord and not be proud of his own service. This is the way of Vaisnava thinking, Vaikuntha thinking. There may be rivalries and apparent competition between servants in performing service, but in the Vaikuntha planets the service of another servant is appreciated not condemmed. This is Vaikuntha competition. There is no question of enmity between servants.
